He was held as a slave, but his spirit was free.

...Frederick Douglass met Jesus Christ.

Amidst the degradations, insults, and wearisome labor of a slave's life, Frederick Douglass met Jesus Christ.  That relationship would sustain him through many hardships---and undergird his life's work: the abolition of the soul-crushing system of human bondage.

God blessed Frederick Douglass with a keen mind and a strong, melodious voice. 

God blessed Frederick Douglass with a keen mind and a strong, melodious voice.  After gaining his own freedom, he used his attributes in the noble cause of freedom for all slaves---editing an antislavery newspaper, speaking in abolitionist meetings, and urging elected officials to change the plight of the oppressed African.  Douglass was particularly hard on those Americans who called themselves "Christian", but still supported the system of slavery.  

...he understood the truth of John 8:36: "If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. 

His prior slavery enhanced his abolition efforts, and Frederick Douglass lived to see the day that American slavery officially ended.  From his early life in the plantation's slave quarters to becoming a nationally-recognized figure and guest at the White House, Frederick Douglass accomplished much in freedom's cause---because he understood the truth of John 8:36:
