Charles Haddon Spurgeon 1834-1892 Charles Haddon Spurgeon was England's best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. We have more writings by Charles Spurgeon than any other Christian in history. At the age of 20 he became pastor of the New Park Street Church. At that time it had only 232 members. As his fame grew among the Christian community of England, the number of people who came to listen to him speak in different venues exceeded 10,000 at times. Those in attendance sometimes included members of Parliament and the Royal Family. Many of the great theologians and preachers of the last century such as D. L. Moody, J. Hudson Taylor, J. C. Ryle, F. B. Meyer, the Bonar brothers, George Müller, and William Robertson Nicoll have said that Spurgeon greatly influenced their spiritual lives. ____________________ Spiritual Warfare in a Believer's Life By Charles H. "Christian Living Classics" Long before the Megachurch, nearly 6,000 people crowded every Service to hear Charles Spurgeon. Discover why his masterful preaching astonished his era. _________________________ (Charles Spurgeon's Dedication of the Book): To my son, Nils "I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the Word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one." _________________________ No Building Seemed Big Enough to House All Those Who Wanted to Hear Him Preach During the remarkable thirty-eight year ministry of Charles Spurgeon in the city of London in the 1800's, no building seemed big enough to house all those who wanted to hear him preach. Spurgeon was noted as a passionate biblical expositor of the Gospel who spoke the language of the common people and met them at the point of their deepest needs. Defeating Satan in the Power of the Gospel Spurgeon was a seasoned veteran in meeting Satan at every corner and defeating Satan in the power of the Gospel. But in keeping with his practical style, there was nothing abstract, ethereal, or mystical about Spurgeon's teaching. He directed his focus where he found Satan at work in the lives of people---enslaving them in sin, keeping them from the influence of the Gospel, hindering their spiritual development, bringing discouragement, depression, and moral failure. Believers need not wonder about satanic principalities and power and how they are to engage them in battle. These life-changing messages of Spurgeon will meet you where you live and help you become more than a conqueror in spiritual warfare. (-From the Back Cover.) ______________________________ |
