Welcome to our Monastery Chapel! Snow-Capped Mt. St. Helens The beautiful Washington State firs and pines outside our chapel window are nearly six stories tall. If you stand at the left side of the window and look out toward the right, you can see a snow-capped Mt. St. Helens in the distance.
A two-story window with a beautiful view. Volcanic Eruption in 2006 An active volcano, we watched Mt. St. Helens erupt once again in 2006, sending massive ash clouds into the sky. And yes, we were able to watch it erupting simply by looking out of our windows! Due to an unfortunately located intervening hill, you have to actually go outside and walk a block to see Oregon's even larger Mt. Hood.
There are no pews... We have dedicated the largest room in our monastery (a large house on 3/4 of an acre) to God as a Chapel. It is a 20 ft. square room, two and one-half stories tall, with a 26 ft. high peaked church-style ceiling, and includes a second story balcony. There are no pews, but there are seven seat pillows against two of the walls, and one gothic-cathedral style carved wooden chair for our own Monk Bob.
Weddings & Christian Movies Our daily Chapel services have included a wedding (with about fifty persons in attendance; the groom bringing the chairs!), a reception for another wedding, and the participation of those Church or other Christian groups that we have invited over for our weekly Christian Movie Night. ____________________________ Copyright © 2007,2008 S.G.P. The Bible, God's Word, is central to our faith. Some have brought guitars, and all have participated in our Chapel services. Recently we were blessed to have some of those from the nearby Portland, Oregon based YWAM (Youth With A Mission) visit for homemade multi-grain cheese-pizza-from-scratch, and to watch the excellent full-length movie on early missionary to China and great man of prayer, "Hudson Taylor".
Lighting a candle (a symbol for Christ, "The Light of the World") can be a way of helping make times of prayer extra special times set apart for and honoring of God. ...you can tell how many persons are praying at any one time by how many candles are lit... Perhaps uniquely to us: We each light a candle when we are in the Chapel praying, and extinguish it when we leave. These are placed in a large pottery bowl containing sand. From the balcony of the Chapel you can tell how many persons are praying at any one time by how many candles are lit. You cannot see the people praying because they are usually against the back wall under the overhang of the balcony.
