Friday,
November 25, 2011 (Kathmandu, Nepal) (ANS) -- Compass Direct News (CDN) is reporting that two years after an explosion shook one of the biggest Catholic churches in Nepal and killed three people, the underground group that orchestrated the attack claimed responsibility for another bomb blast this week. CDN said that a crude bomb went off Tuesday afternoon (Nov. 22) in front of the office of the United Mission to Nepal (UMN), a leading Christian charitable organization in Kathmandu. There were no casualties, but on the same day in the northeastern district of Sindhupalchowk, local residents of the predominantly Buddhist village of Danchhe assaulted two brothers for leading worship services at their home, leaving one unconscious. “Panchman Tamang, 45, and his older brother Buddhiman were attacked by a mob with daggers and wooden batons. As Buddhiman was bleeding profusely, the attackers left him for dead. At the site of the UMN blast, police found leaflets asserting that the majority population in Nepal was Hindu and that therefore it should be a Hindu state,” said the CDN story. Meantime, for the fourth time the government has extended by six months the deadline for putting forth a new constitution, which was due on Wednesday (Nov. 30). A draft of the document says that though people would have the freedom to follow any religion, conversions would be prohibited. “With conversions still deemed a crime in the suggested constitution, we feel that the draft retains the bias towards Christians,” said Chandra Shrestha, pastor at the Nepali Evangelical Church in Bhaktapur Shrestha. “This is a direct violation of our fundamental right to practice whatever religion we want.” You may republish this story with proper attribution. _____________________________________

Former British Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali calls for Immediate Release of Arrested Indian Pastor Saturday,
November 26, 2011 (Oxford, U.K.) (ANS) -- Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali, patron of the UK-based Release International, has called for the immediate release of an Indian pastor accused of bribing Muslims to convert to Christianity. Release International
says Pastor Chander Mani Khanna from Srinagar, Kashmir Province, was
arrested after being summoned by a local Muslim mufti (religious leader)
to appear before a Sharia court -- and answer allegations of converting
Muslim children by offering bribes.
“I am astonished that such a person can be arrested by an India committed to religious freedom and democracy. I call not only for his immediate and unconditional release but also for protection for him and his family. Let us pray that freedom and justice will prevail in Kashmir for everyone: Muslim, Christian and Hindu.” Bishop Nazir-Ali was
the 106th Bishop of Rochester in the Church of England: he retired in
September 2009, taking up a position as director of the Oxford Centre
for Training, Research, Advocacy and Dialogue. He holds dual citizenship
of both Pakistan and Britain. You may republish this story with proper attribution. See Also:
